A father, returning from the Great War, gives his son a notebook and invites him to recount his war – that of a child left at home with his grandmother to fight hunger and hardship in territories occupied by Austro-Hungarian troops. And so that child recounts, in the first person, small emblematic episodes that unfold between the invasion of starving foreign soldiers and the announcement of the war’s end.

A text faithful to historical events, based on archival documents, that tells the occupation through anecdotes seen through a child’s eyes.

Themes: testimony, heritage, resilience.

Published on the occasion of the Centenary of the Great War, initiated by the Fondazione Štěpán Zavřel of Sarmede and with the support of the Veneto Region pursuant to L.R. 1/2008, this picture book for young and old represents a valuable and unprecedented tool to collectively rethink one of the greatest tragedies that have struck our country.
