Thoughts and practices to “see” families from a child’s point of view.

Can a family be represented through holes? Are we really able—as parents and caregivers—to listen to children, even very young ones, when they talk about their family? Are we open to the many ways children experience “family”? How can we give them blank pages and colors for their stories? How can we create environments where vulnerable children can express their experience of family? And how can we share the educational task with parents and extended families? How can we expand our tools for listening to families?
These are just some of the questions explored by the booklet Families, Colors and Blank Pages, written in the spirit of co-education and cultural psychology of families. Like the picture book it accompanies (for children aged 2+), the booklet is a tool for engaging with early childhood up to adulthood.
The collaboration between the University of Padua and Kite Edizioni, begun with I’m Going to School Too and Antonino’s Little Pot, continues with this new picture book and educational booklet created with the Murialdo Community Research and Development Center of Trentino-Alto Adige. The two can be used independently or together by parents, teachers, educators, psychologists, social workers, and others working with families, to listen to how children describe and represent their families, and to co-educate about family.

In this educational booklet the reader will find:
a theoretical framework on listening and family;
a reflective reading of the story There She Is! that highlights its psycho-pedagogical core;
interpretive guidance and practical activities for various settings;
a bibliography with a list of illustrated books for children and parents.
